Due to the fact that im always at home usually doing nothing except sitting infront of the tv watching boring shows or playing my guitar i decided that i would catch up on some reading, i saw a book in dymocks when i was doing my christmas shopping called Standing Tall the Tawera Nikau story. I love to read autobiography's especially ones on athletes who have been challenge in some way during their career and come out a better person, or just to see what really happens in a professional athletes life that no one really sees or hears.
Reading about the challenges that he faced during his long and injujry free career playing for NZ, NZ Maori's, Waikato, Auckland, Sheffield Eagles, Ryedale-York, Castleford, Cronulla, Melbourne and Warrington. Tawera Nikau played 456 first class games all over the world, and won a premeirshhip with melbourne in 1999. It was awesome to see the way he was able to keep his body in shape for that long to be able to play at that level of football for so long. But the real trouble would come after he finished football.
On April 5 2001 Tawera Nikua's wife commited suicide in her garage hanging herself, leaving him with 2 kids, i don't even want to imagine how hard that would have to of been to deal with that it must of been the most difficult period in his life. Then in July 1 2003 he was in a motorbike accident lossing his right leg, he talks about lying in the bed not being able to do anything except wait for the pain to go away. When i did my shoulder i was like that after surgery all i could do was lay in that bed and just let things happen, with the help of drugs i was able to go home the next day and start rehab. He was in there for 8 weeks, while he was there he was given gifts and cards from all over the world, from people he had played with and fans from teams he played for and that was just something that only happen to special people.
On the back of the book it says YOU DON'T NEED TWO LEGS TO CARRY ON WITH ALL THE GREAT THINGS YOU CAN DO. Since i got my results back i had been thinking about what i was gonna do after receiving such a poor mark, and i said to myself after reading this book that it doesn't matter what i got people have to face bigger problems then what i have and come out better then before. I don't know whats gonna happen next year but i know whatever it is im just gonna have to wait and see i know God has something wating for me.
This was a big challenge for me and an awesome book to read about a person who had a very successful career then his life was turned upside down and now he's a new person living a new life.
